Sharif v. New York State Education Department
In 1989, a federal court ruled in Sharif v. New York State Education Department that the state of New York could no longer rely only on SAT scores to determine who would receivestate college scholarships. The Court found that use of SAT scores only was unfair to female students and violated Title IX: White males represented 47% of the scholarship competitors; they received 72% of the Empire Scholarships and 57% of the Regents Scholarships. The state added high school grades to the qualifying criteria, which resulted in scholarships being awarded more equitably among male and female students
